NOCTURNES
2012 Formally, the Nocturnes address space and the ability of black to function as both absence and substance. I've always been concerned with space as the enabler of possibility; nighttime and darkness are specific forms of space, as opportunity and the unknown. In this series I investigate these themes through non-representational responses to my subconscious, with imagery specifically informed by senses other than sight. These paintings were created simultaneously over the course of one week of intense output, so each of them is a member of one body like mushrooms or aspens. I drew from distant experiences, distilling the visceral qualities of my memories more than specific narratives. They are celebrations of phosphorescence, exploration, and the thrill of mystery.
